(Reuters) – Canada will stop issuing visas to people from the three West African nations where Ebola is widespread, the government said on Friday.

The federal citizenship ministry, explaining the move, said in an official document that “the introduction or spread of the disease would pose an imminent and severe risk to public health”.

About 5,000 people have died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone this year in the worst Ebola outbreak on record. Fears rose that the disease could spread beyond the region after a few cases were diagnosed in Spain and the United States.

Canada, which has not reported any cases of Ebola, is following in the footsteps of Australia, which on Tuesday became the first rich nation to issue such a ban.

The country’s official in charge of the response to Ebola said the move was medically unjustified.

Under the new regulations, which come into force immediately, Canada will not process visa applications from foreign nationals who have been in an Ebola-affected country within the previous three months.

U.S. President Barack Obama is so far to impose similar travel restrictions.

Many people are freaking out about ebola, but the fact is that there's no reason to panic because it spreads too slowly. Way slower than other infectious diseases. Statistically, this means that the virus can easily be stopped in a highly developed country like Canada and the United States, but why the panic on the main stream media. Like any other deadly infectious disease, it's something you don't take lightly. Sure, ebola may have measles beat in terms of per-infection fatality. The above is modern-day statistics, the death rate for measles was even higher in the past.

Total known ebola deaths, 1976-2012? 1590. More people die every week from measles than that.


It is easy to forget that we live in the developed world. After all, the Spanish Flu was just the flu, right?

The more the result of a combination of poverty, lack of education, and culture where the disease is currently out of control. In all fairness, those three factors are probably why the disease is out of control there in the first place.

On the other hand, travel bans and mass quarantines do tend to drive people underground and encourage behavior you really don't want in an epidemic. Really, the last thing we need is people who arrive in the Canada U.S. and other nations after somehow evading a travel ban not coming forward with symptoms as a result.
